Current Member Municipalities
Western Piedmont Sister Cities Association (WPSCA) is comprised of a four-county region, which encompasses Alexander, Burke, Caldwell, and Catawba counties. It also includes the municipalities of Claremont, Conover, Hickory, Lenoir, Morganton, Newton, and Valdese. Local governments pay annual membership dues and may contribute additional funding, which is combined with corporate and scholarship foundation monies for specific activities, events, and exchanges. Each local government appoints two elected officials or their designees to liaise with WPSCA. Support services are generously provided by the Western Piedmont Council of Governments (WPCOG).
The Sister Cities International (SCI) program was initiated in 1956 by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. SCI creates global relationships and partnerships based on culture, education, business and trade exchanges. Its mission is to promote peace through mutual respect, understanding and cooperation-one individual, one community at a time. Their motto is to connect globally and thriving locally. The Sister Cities International network unites tens of thousands of people-people diplomats and volunteers in nearly 500 member communities with over 2,000 partnerships in more than 140 countries. WPSCA is proud to be a member of SCI.
Individual WPSCA local government members are also encouraged to pursue their own Sister Cities International partnerships to complement its region-to-region partnership with the Altenburger Land in Germany. Currently, the town of Valdese also has a Sister Cities relationship with Torre Pellice, located in Italy.
